In Melbourne, our rivers and creeks are essential to our way of life. That’s why, as part of the Enhancing Our Dandenong Creek program, Melbourne Water is working with stakeholders and the community to improve the habitat, ecology and amenity of Dandenong Creek.

What we’re doing

We’re removing weeds and planting native plants along a 2.23 km stretch of Dandenong Creek.

Invasive weeds along the creek including Blackberry, Japanese Honeysuckle, Willow, and Sweet Pittosporum will be removed.

These weeds will be replaced with 30,000 indigenous trees, shrubs and ground species like Swamp Gum, Yellow Box, Sweet Bursaria and Kangaroo Grass.

Why are we doing this?

Once established, the vegetation will protect the banks of the creek and provide habitat so our native wildlife can thrive.

The new plants will provide essential habitat and food sources for native wildlife, including caterpillars, butterflies, frogs and birds.

The plants will also provide habitat for the large variety of 90 bird species that have been recorded in the area, such as Spoonbills, Herons, Willy Wagtails, and Nankeen Night-Heron.

Timing of works

Weed control works will be ongoing, periodically, from December 2024 to June 2029.

Work hours will be between 7am and 4pm, Monday- Friday.

Following the initial weed control efforts, Melbourne Water will continue to tend to the creek ensuring that weeds are controlled while the vegetation becomes established.

Location

The works will be conducted along a 2.2km stretch of Dandenong Creek, between Burwood Hwy and High Street.

Melbourne Water thanks the community for your patience and understanding while we undertake these works.

Acknowledgement

Melbourne Water acknowledges the Wurundjeri people as the Traditional Owners of this land.
