This Teacher Guide includes a series of lessons for you to use in your classroom to compliment the Future Water Story Experience at the Western Treatment Plant. The lesson plans outline key content and concepts that will enhance your student’s learning experience. 

There are different resources for you to use pre-visit, during your visit and post-visit. The lessons get students to explore and investigate the theme: How do we make the use of water in Melbourne sustainable?

Learning outcomes

  • Explain the different methods to overcoming water scarcity; both by reducing demand for water and increasing the supply of water through alternate water sources
  • Know that water is a scarce resource, and it needs to be managed to ensure water security
  • Know that the liveability of Melbourne depends on a safe and secure supply of water; as well as treatment of wastewater
  • Understand that Melbourne's water security will be impacted by climate change

To help you plan, all our resources are editable. You can decide which ones to use and that best suit your students’ needs and learning requirements.

Pre-visit 1: Introduction Lesson - introducing the challenge & teams!
  • Prepare your students for their visit to the WTP. The introduction includes key content and terms to help students participate in the Future Water Story.
  • Watch the video and learn all about the challenge your students will manage; and the different teams that students will be allocated.
  GIS map Lesson* (optional) Navigate a GIS map of Melbourne and learn about the sewerage and water supply network.
During your visit Systems & Innovation Tour Worksheet* (optional)
  • Students collate the information they gather and learn when travelling around the site 
  • Download the worksheet/s and get your students to bring it on the day of your visit 
Post visit 2: Concluding Lesson
  • Review and reflect on the Future Water Story experience
  • Communicate the strategies and actions required to make the use of water in Melbourne sustainable with reference to environmental, economic and social factors.
