We’re undertaking a four-year program aimed at controlling rapidly spreading weed species and revegetation with native species along a 2.3km western section of Dandenong Creek, from Ferntree Gully Road to Mulgrave Reserve.
What we’re doing
We’re removing invasive weeds including blackberries, arum lily, honeysuckle and large woody weeds such as pittosporum, willows, ivy, desert ash and inkweed.
We will be replacing them with 8,000 native plants and shrubs, to help protect the banks of the creek and provide habitat so our native wildlife can thrive.
All chosen species of native plants and shrubs were carefully considered to thrive in the local conditions. This will ensure the new vegetation builds upon and connects with the established plants in the area and provides a wildlife corridor facilitating movement of native animals.

Why are we doing this?
Dandenong Creek includes a number of high ecological value areas including Jells Park, Shepherds Bush and Dandenong Valley Wetlands, which attract many water birds such as the eastern great egret and royal spoonbill. Weed control will focus on woody and scrambling weeds to reduce infestations and improve vegetation quality along Dandenong Creek. By removing these weeds, we will help to improve the health of the creek and nearby Port Phillip Bay, both for community and the environment so our native wildlife can thrive.
What can I expect?
Our work will involve treating and managing invasive weeds and planting new native vegetation to improve the health of the waterway. During works, you may experience some temporary disruptions, such as noise from machinery and increased vehicle traffic in the area.
Temporary fencing will be installed around the planting plots to exclude animals that would otherwise eat the young plants. The fencing will be removed after the plants have established.
Pedestrian and bike riding access along the Eastlink Trail and informal trails throughout the site will be maintained at all times.
When to expect us
We will be working periodically from November 2024 until mid-2025, with replanting to commence from mid-2025. Melbourne Water will continue controlling weeds and helping new vegetation to establish until early 2028.
Project location
The works will be conducted along a 2.3km western section of Dandenong Creek, from Ferntree Gully Road through to Mulgrave Reserve. Planting plot locations shown are indicative only and may change.
