Explore waterways in the west by foot this summer
Melbourne Water is encouraging Melbournians to put on their comfortable shoes, fill up a water bottle and explore our iconic waterways of the west this holiday season.
Victoria Walks has made this activity easier, producing 18 interactive maps as part of Melbourne Water’s Liveable Communities Liveable Waterways Program.
The maps include time, length and difficulty ratings, photos and points of interest including wetlands, wide grassy areas and billabongs where you might find some frogs!
Melbourne Water Head of Waterways and Catchment Services North West Rod Clifford said it’s a great way to learn more about an area to make the most out of your visit.
“There are so many incredible places to walk in the west where you can appreciate our waterways and enjoy open spaces, abundant birdlife and beautiful views,” Mr Clifford said.
“You don’t have to travel far. A waterway walk is a great option for those looking for a free school holiday activity, to boost fitness or simply immerse yourself in nature.”
The maps include walks at Werribee River-Wirribi Yulluk, Lollypop Creek, Skeleton Creek, Kororoit Creek, Jacksons Creek, Taylors Creek, Moonee Ponds Creek-Moonee Moonee and Coastal parks and estuaries.
Victoria Walks Executive Officer Ben Rossiter said the maps were created with the assistance of community groups, who were passionate about the histories and biodiversity of the sites.
“The 18 Walking Maps showcase how much Melbourne’s west has to offer with nature walks ranging from 1.2km to an all-day, 22km hiking adventure exploring four creeks, two wetlands, a marine sanctuary and two beaches.”
Our rivers, creeks and bays are essential to our way of life. They provide places for our native wildlife to thrive, they’re the lifeblood of Melbourne and part of what makes living here so great.
