S1:     Due to Melbourne’s population growth, particularly in the surrounding suburbs, the existing sewers in the area are undersized, so to continue to provide world-class sewerage services and protect the local environment here, we’re building a new sewer connecting two existing sewers which will split the catchment for the existing sewer in half and direct all the new flows down the new sewer.

S1:     So we’re currently mobilized to our main compound site at the corner of Hampstead and Williamsons Road were we’re excavating our launch shaft for the tunnel boring machine, we will in the coming months mobilise into the Maribyrnong River area where we’ll be building the pipe bridge.

S1:     Here at our site, we’re excavating our launch shaft for our tunnel boring machine, the launch shaft will be excavated using drill and blast, we will be launching the tunnel boring machine to install our new sewer.

S1:     The new sewer will last for over the next 100 years servicing the local community.

S2:     At Melbourne Water we always try to make sure that we leave things you know in the same or better condition as before.

S2:     One of the things as part of this project, we’re building the new bridge over the river but we’re making sure that it’s wider and safer and so therefore it will be really great enhancement to the Maribyrnong River trail.

S2:     We’ve had to close the trail just so we can get our trucks and equipment in to build a new bridge over the river, and that bridge will carry the new sewer pipe across to the other side of the river, but we’re also building a new trail along the southern part of the river so that it’s connecting a missing link in the trail, so that will be a real benefit to the community.

S2:     We’re working hard to make sure that the community are informed and know what to expect as construction continues, we’re doing that in a variety of ways, community bulletins, pop ups that people can come along and ask questions to the team, and we’re encouraging people to follow our Your Say page, it’s on the Melbourne Water website, and then that can be informed of changes as things happen.

S2:     The team’s always on hand, through email, telephone, happy to take your calls anytime.
