In its upper reaches, the Yarra flows through several towns, including Warburton, Launching Place and Healesville.
Around 24 kilometres north-east of Warburton is the Upper Yarra Reservoir.
Between Warburton and Warrandyte, the Yarra is a Victorian Heritage River in recognition of its recreational, natural and cultural heritage value.
