Pipeline transformed into new community park at Truganina

The community at Truganina turned out on Saturday to celebrate the opening of a new park along the old Main Outfall Sewer, where locals and visitors can meet, play, and relax.

The new park sits in the western part of Zone 5, from Skeleton Creek to Forsyth Road in Truganina and features a community education shelter that provides easy access to a new amphitheatre and community garden, and Skeleton Creek aqueduct.

The works are part of an ambitious project to turn a 19th-century sewer into a modern, open space that extends 27 kilometres from Spotswood to Werribee.

“For more than a century, this pipeline has contributed to the health of generations of Melburnians, and it will continue to do so as a new space for amenity and activity,” said Melbourne Water Executive General Manager, Service and Asset Lifecycle, Craig Dixon.

“Congratulations to our partners at Wyndham City Council, and we look forward to working with them on the next stage, which will be in the eastern half of Zone 5.

“The works led by Wyndham City Council include 43,500 new plants and trees and a Narrarrang Ngarri’ She-oak sculpture by Kait James, which acknowledges the Bunurong people of the Kulin Nations’ care for Country,” said Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Mia Shaw.

The first parkland at Pilot Park was completed by Melbourne Water in 2018 to show the potential for a linear parkland to connect the community with amenities, help with urban cooling, and treat and use urban stormwater for irrigation.

Further works are planned for the eastern part of Zone 5, between Forsyth Road and Sayers Road, to complete the Arndell Park stormwater harvesting system, new ‘sponge’ garden beds, and a program of tree-planting.

Greening the Pipeline is a partnership led by Wyndham City Council, including Melbourne Water, Greater Western Water, the Department of Transport and Planning, the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), and is supported by Greening the West.
