Melbourne Water wins at Australian Water Association (AWA) Awards
Melbourne Water has been recognised at the Australian Water Association Awards for its innovative water infrastructure and commitment to reaching net-zero.
Up against several innovative and forward-thinking projects Melbourne Water, with John Holland-KBR JV, won the Infrastructure Project Innovation Excellence Award (metro) for its Eastern Treatment Plant Biogas Handling System Stage 1 Upgrade.
The Eastern Treatment Plant Biogas Handling System Stage 1 Upgrade has been able to maximise biogas conversion to bioenergy to deliver on Melbourne Water’s commitment to Net Zero. The team were able to implement several innovative approaches which improved safety, production, reliability, longevity and ability to expand to address forecast population growth.
This project is an industry-leading example of Melbourne Water delivering necessary operational requirements, while ensuring immediate and on-going social, economic, and environmental benefits.
Melbourne Water’s Managing Director Dr Nerina Di Lorenzo said that the industry recognition was a huge source of pride.
“Melbourne Water, and the projects that we help deliver, aim to protect the natural resources that sustain us – so Melbourne remains a great place to live today, tomorrow and for generations to come.
“I’m continually in awe of the outstanding work that our people undertake alongside our partners to enhance Melbourne’s water supply network and infrastructure,” Di Lorenzo said.

In addition to this win, Melbourne Water was nominated for the Industry Safety Excellence Award.
The Australian Water Awards were announced last night at its gala event, held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre as part of Ozwater’24.
The water industry’s night of nights celebrates outstanding work by individuals and organisations, and recognises innovation in technology, business and project delivery.
