Melbourne Water project a finalist in Water Industry Safety Excellence Award

Melbourne Water’s M22/M46 Water Mains Renewal project, a joint partnership with John Holland-KBR JV, is a finalist in the Australian Water Association (AWA) Awards for Water Industry Safety Excellence.

The AWA award for Water Industry Safety Excellence acknowledges outstanding initiatives that actively improve safety and injury prevention for everyone working with water.

An innovative approach was taken to laying pipe in a 605m section of a watermain renewal project which otherwise presented challenging conditions of narrow spaces, overheads and existing ground services. The team consulted and identified a solution which involved using a remote-controlled automatic latching hook for the purpose of pipelay.

This method eliminated numerous hazards for workers and has since been used more widely in other areas of the project.

Luis Plata, Melbourne Water Senior Project Manager says, “The current framework developed by Melbourne Water has a collaborative approach and encourages open discussion about safety. At the end of the day, safety always comes first.

“We have replaced a pipe that’s more than 100 years old and it’s gratifying to know that these works will be in place for next 100 years servicing generations to come.

“John Holland KBR JV understands the needs and adopts Melbourne Water’s safety culture. This recognition is exciting for the team and highlights the importance of having initiatives that address safety. I’m proud of the team that have come together on this project.”
