Melbourne Water celebrates the beauty and resilience of the Birrarung (Yarra River) in a month-long festival.

In celebration of World Rivers Day on 24 September 2024, Melbourne Water is pleased to announce its partnership with the Yarra Riverkeeper Association and the upcoming Birrarung Riverfest 2023, a celebration of the Birrarung.

The Birrarung, also known as the Yarra River, it stretches from its source on Mt Baw Baw in the Yarra Ranges National Park, north-east of Melbourne, all the way to Port Phillip Bay.

Melbourne Water works with partners like the Yarra Riverkeeper and many other dedicated groups to care for over 25,000kms of Melbourne’s rivers and creeks, including those in the Birrarung catchment. From recreational activities to supporting wildlife habitats, the Birrarung is truly a treasure that deserves to be recognised and celebrated. 

Waterways like the Birrarung are essential to our way of life here in Melbourne and are home to our native wildlife.  

Jesse Barrett, Acting Head of Waterways and Catchments North-West said, “Through our partnership with the Yarra Riverkeeper Association, we aim to raise awareness about the importance of protecting and preserving the Birrarung and its surrounding environment.”

Birrarung Riverfest 2023 runs from 24 September until 22 October 2023. Melbourne Water will be supporting events for the community to come together and participate in activities along the Birrarung.  

One of the highlights of the Birrarung Riverfest is the Bolin Bolin Billabong Walk in Bulleen. This scenic walk offers participants an opportunity to connect with nature and explore the beauty of the surrounding area. Bolin Bolin is a significant location that holds cultural significance for the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and environmental importance and one that is a priority under the Yarra Strategic Plan 2022–32. 

Another fun activity is the Platypus Spotting Walk in-Pound Bend. The Platypus Spotting Walk in Pound Bend is a chance to spot these elusive creatures in their natural habitat, further highlighting Melbourne Water’s commitment to environmental conservation.
