Why this is important

In Melbourne, water is essential to our way of life. Today, affordable, clean water is readily available to our homes and businesses whenever we need it.

The water mains running under the pipe track along the median of St Georges Road play an important role in our water supply network.

Flow meters allow us to monitor the amount of water flowing through the water mains. They are at the end of their service life and will be upgraded to ensure we can continue to supply high quality drinking water to Melbourne’s suburbs.

About the project

The project is expected to start in early 2025 and take around three to four months to complete. The works will take place in several locations along the St Georges Road median, but will not require the shared path to be closed. Traffic management will be in place to allow construction equipment to be delivered on site and to ensure the safety of pedestrians, bicycle riders and our workers.

What will the works involve?

Works include:

  • Installing new flow meters along the water mains.
  • Decommissioning redundant equipment.
  • Installing maintenance holes and pits.
  • Upgrading and installing new electrical equipment and cabinets.
  • Reinstatement of grassed areas surrounding the new equipment.

You may notice additional construction impacts, such as dust and noise in the area.

We'll be working from 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday, and 7am to 1pm on Saturdays (except in an emergency, weekend works are not expected for this project).

Aqua Metro Services will delivery this project on behalf of Melbourne Water.

Local water supplies will not be affected by these works.
