Why this is important

In Melbourne, rain and storms are part of our way of life. That’s why at Melbourne Water we manage a complex drainage system across the whole city and plan for the impacts of stormwater to keep our homes and businesses safe from flooding.

During level crossing works on Centre Road in Bentleigh, the Bentleigh Main Drain was lowered to accommodate the lowered railway line. We are installing a new pump system to aid the operation of the drain.

The Bentleigh Main Drain allows stormwater to travel below the Frankston railway line, from the east (Bendigo Avenue) to the west (Burgess Street), to ensure the stormwater does not impact the day-to-day operations of the railway line.

About the project

The project is expected to commence in early 2025 and take approximately three months to complete. The works will take place near the parking bay on the east side of Burgess Street, near the corner of Centre Road. Traffic management will be in place to safely manage local traffic travelling through the area.

What will the works involve?

Works include installing:

  • a new siphon pump
  • new electrical supply to the pump
  • a new electrical cabinet.

You may notice additional construction impacts such as dust and noise in the area.

We'll be working from 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 1pm on Saturdays (except in an emergency, weekend works are not expected for this project).

Aqua Metro Services will deliver this project on behalf of Melbourne Water.
