We share the greatest backyard
Our rivers, creeks and iconic bays, and all the plants and green spaces in between, are home to our native wildlife of fishes, platypus, frogs and birds, providing places for them to thrive.
They’re the lifeblood of our natural landscape – they’re what makes living here great.
That’s why at Melbourne Water, we are constantly tending to all the rivers, creeks and surrounding land of our greatest backyard. The work we do today ensures our rivers, creeks and open spaces remain healthy and clean for generations to come.
We care for and protect our waterways
At Melbourne Water we care for our city’s beautiful rivers and creeks. We manage 25,000 kilometres of waterways across Greater Melbourne as well as working with our partners to manage 33,000 hectares of surrounding open space. That’s around 13,000 MCG ovals!
Water for the environment
We can’t restore every river and creek to its natural state, but we can help protect and improve them. That’s why we help set aside water for the environment to keep them healthy.
Why our rivers and creeks matter
Our waterways are an important resource shared by people, plants and animals. Our rivers and creeks provide habitat for more than 1,800 species of native plants and 600 species of native animals. They also provide places for us to exercise, relax, socialise and connect with nature – which are important for the health and wellbeing of our communities.
Visit our beautiful rivers and creeks
Many of our rivers and creeks form the backdrop to some of Melbourne’s most iconic landmarks, with so many ways to enjoy them. Looking for something to do this weekend?
