Melbourne Water launches new learning tool for students and teachers on World Water Day

Melbourne Water has launched a fun and engaging 3D learning experience for teachers and students, allowing them to discover key stages of the natural and urban water cycle in a simulation of Melbourne.

From evaporation to precipitation, World of Water helps students to connect abstract ideas to real places by linking topics like transpiration to forests and precipitation to catchments.

This new release also includes a Teacher Toolbox, which features lesson plans, worksheets, and videos to bring water education to life in the classroom.

We found out what teachers wanted from us, so we provided:

  • A Teacher Toolbox – A collection of expert-reviewed, curriculum-aligned resources, including lesson plans, worksheets, and videos to bring water education to life in the classroom.
  • The World of Water Interactive Map – A fun learning experience where students explore how water moves through our city and discover their role in protecting it for the future.

Students can use a daily tracker to see Melbourne's real-time water storage, rainfall, and water use data, view of Melbourne’s drinking water and sewerage distribution system, and zoom in to learn more about a wide range of topics.

From visits to our treatment plants and wetlands, to our Future Water Story school tour, World of Water is one part of how we provide water literacy and education to the community.

Students at primary and secondary levels will love World of Water, with the content particularly interesting for Years 7 and 8.

World of Water will receive content updates that reflect topical interests and continue to meet the needs of teachers and students.
