Improving Maribyrnong River – a Healthy Waterways Initiative
The Waterways Alliance, on behalf of Melbourne Water, is undertaking a project to rehabilitate a 2km stretch of river bank on the western side of the Maribyrnong River, between Dynon Rd and Fisher Parade, Footscray.
The project involves works to control erosion and revegetation, which in time will help to improve the environmental health of the river and create a better habitat for native wildlife such as birds, fish and frogs.
What are we doing and when?
The Maribyrnong River has previously had a variety of rock work to help protect the bank from damage during high flows and tides. Some of this rockwork dates back to the 1920s and is starting to fail in a number of places.
This project will repair and improve the existing rock work used to stabilise banks. We will be using a machine to rework existing rock and additional rock imported to site.
Following the rock work we will lay jute mat and/or mulch the area above the top of the rock work in preparation for revegetation works.
Revegetation works will take place in mid 2011 when weather conditions are suitable. We will plant around 3,000 native salt marsh plants.
Works will commence from early May 2011 and take up to 5 months to complete. We will maintain the project area for three years following planting to support the new vegetation.
Will traffic along the Maribyrnong River Shared Trail be impacted by the project?
At times, small sections of the Maribyrnong River Shared Trail will be impacted by the project. Traffic management measures and in some areas temporary detours will be put in place to ensure the safety of the community and our work crews.
Care will be taken to minimise inconvenience to path users, however, there will be delays associated with the traffic management measures and detours.
The areas of the trail requiring detours will be well signed and traffic controllers will be on site to assist commuters.
Please abide by traffic management measures, detour directions and signage. We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding during these works.
Dynon Road to the Railway Bridge
Bicycle and pedestrian traffic on the Maribyrnong River shared Trail will be impacted by trucks moving rock from stockpiles to the river bank and by the excavator working on the bank.
Signage will be placed upstream and downstream of the works to warn path users of changed path conditions and the movement of pedestrians and cyclists will be under the direction of traffic controllers located at either end of the works section.
Where machinery is located on the path, bollards will delineate the area to be used by machinery and the area of path safely trafficable by path users. Where the machinery is taking up the entire path, path users will be directed to walk around the machinery and back onto the path. Cyclists will be required to dismount and walk their bicycles through the construction area.
Railway Bridge to Ballarat Road
Bicycle and pedestrian traffic on the Maribyrnong River Shared Trail will be impacted by trucks moving rock from stockpiles to the river bank via the access road adjacent to Newell’s Paddock and by the excavator working from the pedestrian path.
South bound cyclists and pedestrians will be detoured around the works, to the eastern side of the river via the Stock Bridge.
If path users need to stay on the western side of the river, they will be required to stop on the path until the excavator can move and allow them to pass by safely. Cyclists will be required to dismount and walk their bicycles through the construction area.
Signage will be placed upstream and downstream of the works to warn path users of changed path conditions and the movement of pedestrians and cyclists will be under the direction of traffic controllers located at either end of the works section.
We expect that the works within this section of the shared trail will take up to 2 weeks to complete.
Ballarat Road to opposite Flemington Landing
There will be minimal impact to bicycle and pedestrian traffic in this section.
Signage will be placed upstream and downstream of the works to warn path users of changed path conditions and the movement of pedestrians and cyclists will be under the direction of traffic controllers located at either end of the works section.
Where machinery is located on the path, pedestrians and cyclists may be directed to walk around the machinery and back onto the path.
Opposite Flemington Landing to Footscray Rowing Club
There will be minimal impact to bicycle and pedestrian traffic in this section.
Signage will be placed upstream and downstream of the works to warn path users of changed path conditions and the movement of pedestrians and cyclists will be under the direction of traffic controllers located at either end of the works section.
Where machinery is located on the path pedestrians and cyclists may be directed to walk around the machinery and back onto the path.
