Protecting the past for the future

In the past, Melbourne Water addressed cultural heritage issues on a project-by-project basis. In 2006/07, work progressed on developing an overarching strategy to ensure better coordination and understanding of roles, responsibilities and expectations. Although the intention was to finalise the strategy this year, Melbourne Water Board and management have decided further stakeholder consultation is required before the strategy is ready for implementation.

The strategy will cover indigenous and non-indigenous aspects of cultural heritage and is designed to recognise that we need to work in ways that respect community views. For example, formal consideration will be given to the impacts of works on rivers and creeks that are significant to indigenous communities.

The strategy will also provide improved outcomes through sustainable work practices that will guide organisational policies, guidelines and procedures.
