Getting to know communities in our extended areas

The Government’s Our Water Our Future Action Plan extended Melbourne Water’s waterways and drainage boundary by more than 5000 square kilometres to cover most of the Port Phillip and Westernport region.

To develop our knowledge of these extended areas, we began a program of investigation, research, information collection and consultation with councils, retail water businesses, communities, landholders, Landcare and farming groups, and other stakeholders. This also helped us understand community expectations and establish required service levels.

Relationships have also been built through our Making Connections events, which were held to develop new ways of working with organisations, groups and individuals with an interest in the future protection and management of waterways in these areas.

Four events were held with representatives of government departments, environment groups such as the Seagrass Partnership, local schools and industry, Waterwatch, Landcare and councils.
